Types of gingivitis
- Acute ulcerative gingivitis - this is a painful infection of the gum with sore littered all over the mouth thereby causing gingival over growth, this may also be caused by drug therapy
- Chronic gingivitis - this is a common disease of the oral cavity, it is an early stage of periodontal disease and may lead to receding gum, but it is reversible with good oral hygiene.
The main cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene which leads to the accumulation of bacteria at the gum line, these accumulation may be tiny but the bacteria in them produce toxins which create an inflammation in the gum tissues. The inflammation can cause an enlargement of the gingiva and lead to periodontitis.
